Renewable
Energy Certificates
Householders can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by
installing solar water heaters.
Under the Renewable Energy (Electricity) Act 2000, the
installation of a solar water heater can be eligible for Renewable
Energy Certificates (REC’s) under the Mandatory Renewable
Energy Target, provided that certain conditions are meet. A method
of measuring the amount of renewable energy produced or non-renewable
energy displaced is the creation of RECs.
An REC is the equivalent of 1 MWh of electricity produced from
renewable energy resources or displaced from non-renewable energy
resources. The installation of a solar water heater may be considered
to displace electricity produced from non-renewable energy resources
and therefore be eligible for the creation of RECs. The solar water
heater must displace electricity to heat water and result in a positive
greenhouse gas benefit to be eligible.
Solar water heaters are adding to the benefit of the scheme by
reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The amount of electricity displaced
by a solar water heater, and therefore the number of RECs which
can be created for its installation is measured over a ten year
period.
RECs can be traded, purchased and sold. This has the benefit of
making a solar water heater installation cheaper as the owner of
the solar water heater will obtain a financial gain from the sale
of RECs.
