Reedbeds
Constructed wetlands or reedbeds as they are more commonly known are a relatively new technology that began in the early 70’s. A reedbed is a human designed and installed complex of saturated substrates, emergent and submergent vegetation (typically reeds), animal life, and water that simulates natural wetlands for human use and benefits.

Wastewater, black or grey, is passed through the root zone of the reeds where it undergoes treatment.

Primary treatment via a septic tank is required prior to wastewater entering a reedbed. The inclusion of a septic tank into the treatment train is essential to separate solids from liquids.
