| Intermittent sand filtration of wastewater is
a century old technology that is being applied to rural communities, small
clusters of homes and individual residences worldwide. Sand filters can be engineered into an array of on-site wastewater treatment systems were high groundwater, poor soils, or other site constraints rule out the use of a conventional septic system. Sand filters are often used as a second step in wastewater treatment after solids have been filtered out in a septic tank or other sedimentation process. Sand filters offer consistent performance rates due to their basic technology and relatively fail-safe technology. The inclusion of a sand filer can drastically reduce the size of soil infiltration systems while extending the operational performance of on-site wastewater treatment systems. |
