Water Saving Tips

1. Mulch your garden
Save water through evaporation loss by as much as 70% by simply mulching garden.

2. Fix drips
A tap leaking at a rate of one drip per second can waste over 12,000 litres of water per year (equivalent of 120 full bath tubs). Similarly a leaking toilet if not maintained can waste between 4000 and 90,000 litres a year whilst contributing to your annual water bill.

3. Retro-fit fixtures
Retrofitting fixtures around the house is great way to conserve water. Simply by converting your old cistern to a dual flush you can conserve as much as 67% water. If you already have a dual flush toilet then try just using the half flush option or place a brick or bottle filled with water in the cistern to displace water.
By installing an AAAAA rated water efficient shower head and tap aerators you could potentially half your household water consumption whilst saving on greenhouse emissions by conserving energy used to heat water. This will help save you money in the long run whilst helping to do your bit to conserve such a precious resource.

4. Take a short shower
Try using an egg timer and limit your showering time to two-three minutes.

5. Install a rainwater tank
Installing a rainwater tank to collect storm water is a great way to reduce your water bills while at the same time helping to ensure that you can water your garden in times of water restrictions. When installing a rainwater tank it is important to consider size. Generally tanks between 2000-4000 litres are good for areas of medium-high rainfall while larger tanks between 5000-10,000 litres are better suited to drier areas. For real savings Environmental Plumbing Solutions can connect you’re toilet and washing machine via a smart flush pump which supplies rainwater and tops up with mains water during times of low rainfall. The pump senses the level of water in the tank and ensures there is always adequate supply.
6. Install a greywater system
By installing a greywater system you could potentially reuse 61% of household water. Re-use of greywater can be as simple as installing a inline diverter to the washing machine waste or in more sophisticated applications installing a storage well and pump to collect and disperse greywater around the garden via subsurface irrigation.
